ABOUT STRAY STUDIO

Storytelling shaped by people, place and process.

A Note from Nic

I never really set out to start a business.

After years working across strategy, production and content, I found myself drawn less to the marketing and more to the people behind it. The conversations, the routines, the places and the process that often go unseen.

That curiosity eventually became Stray Studio.

Today I work with businesses who care deeply about what they do and want their story told with the same level of care.

No matter the project, the goal remains the same: create work that feels honest, human and connected to the people behind it.

Nic Maloney, photographer and storyteller behind Stray Studio, documenting people, place and process across regional Australia.

MY STORY

Since I was a kid, I've always been drawn to anything creative. I didn't realise it at the time, but looking back, storytelling for me all started with music.

I played guitar all the way through school, and the more I played, the more I fell in love with it.

It taught me to pay attention to rhythm, atmosphere and, most importantly, feeling. How to paint a picture, create emotion and tell a story without ever saying a word.

That eventually carried through to photography, which has been part of my life for more than ten years now.

My favourite photographs were never the perfectly planned ones. They were the in-between moments with friends and family, the quiet details of a camping trip, the image that somehow captured exactly how a place felt to be in.

In a lot of ways, that's what inspired the name Stray Studio.
The definition of "stray" is to travel along a route not originally intended.

My best work has always been when I've stayed completely open to following wherever the story leads, rather than sticking to a predetermined plan.

That same instinct shapes every project I take on today.

Whether it's a family farm, a regional business or a larger campaign, I'm always trying to understand the people behind the work and tell their story in a way that feels genuine to who they are.

Because the stories that stay with us are rarely the loudest. They're the ones that make us feel something.
